     This week the children will review previous taught skills in reading, math, and spelling.  There will not be any spelling words this week.  I will continue to assess students on reading skills.  The children will continue to work on addition, subtraction, word problems, and estimation.  We will continue to learn about different ways that people celebrate Christmas.
     
·                The children may wear Christmas shirts and school shirts on Monday thru Thursday.  On Friday your child may wear their pajamas.
·         All first graders will participate in the first grade play.  All students will need to wear pajamas.  Your child will did to meet in our classroom by 6:00 dressed for the play.
The first grade play is Tuesday, December 16th in the High School Gym.
·         Our class will have a Christmas party on Thursday around 9:30 A.M.   Look beside your child’s name for what your child will need to bring for the party.

·         All children will need to bring a $5.00 book to exchange at the class party on Thursday.  Please allow your child to wrap their book.  We will play a game at our party.

·         The children will have a Christmas stocking hung in the classroom.  It would be greatly appreciated, if each parent would donate something to go in the stocking.  We have ten students in our class.

     This week the children will learn about the long sound of /o/ and /u/ with the silent e.  The children will read a story titled "The Last Train".  They will learn about things that happened in the past and things of the present.  They will continue to work on reading for fluency and understanding.  The children will write several stories in which they use a graphic organizer.  They will rewrite stories telling details of things that happened at the beginning, middle, and at the end of the story.  The children will also read the story "The Polar Express".
      The children will continue to work on learning math facts and word problems.  They will be learning about estimation and interpreting information from a graph.
     The children will continue to learn about different ways people celebrate the holiday during  this time of year.  They will learn how people celebrate Christmas in Mexico and the holidays of Hanukkah and Kwanzaa
        The children will be reading holiday books in the classroom.  They will not be allowed to check books out of the library.  The library will be close this week due to the book fair.  Your child may bring money in and purchase books from the book fair any day this week.
       The children will be practicing for the Christmas play.  The first grade play will be on December 16th.  All children should wear pajamas to the play.  More information will be sent home later this week.
        The children are excited that they will be allowed to wear jeans and a Christmas shirt or school shirt all of this week.  The elementary school brought in over 1600 cans of foods.

       This week the children will  be learning about the  sound of soft /g/ and soft /c/.  They will be reading different versions of the story "The Gingerbread Man".  They will continue to work on reading for fluency and understanding.  They will be retell and rewriting the sequence of stories that they read.  They will compare and contrast the different versions of the story.  In math the children will continue to work on learning math facts.  They will review tens and ones and work word problems with two digit numbers.
       The children will learn about different holidays that are celebrated at this time of year.
Thanks to all parents for coming to our Pow-Wow or sending treats.  The children had a great time.

This week the children will learn about the long /i/ silent e.  They will read stories with words with the long/i/ silent sound.  In reading they will continue to work on sight words, decoding skills, comprehension, and reading for fluency.  In language they will be introduced to the present tense of verbs.  The children will continue to learn about the first Thanksgiving, Pilgrims, and Indians.  They will learn poems and songs, do special crafts, compare and contrast the first Thanksgiving and the Thanksgiving we celebrate today.
       On Friday the children will have a pow-wow in our classroom.  They will sing songs and poems that they have learned throughout the week.  They will taste some of the foods that the Pilgrims and Indians had on the first Thanksgiving.  It would be greatly appreciated,  if you would send something special for the children to taste that the Indians and Pilgrims ate on the first Thanksgiving.
       I am wishing all of you a safe and  Happy Thanksgiving.

This week the children will enjoy learning about the Pilgrims, Indians, and the First Thanksgiving.  They will be doing art projects, reading, and writing about Thanksgiving.  Your child will need to bring a paper towel roll, toilet paper rolls and a coffee can to use for their art projects.
       In reading the children will be introduced to the sound that long /a/ stands for and the silent e.
We will be reading several stories with this sound in it.
      In math the children will continue to work with learning their addition facts.  The children will begin taking addition speed drill.  The children will have 2 minutes to work 20 simple addition problems.  The children will begin learning more about place value.  They will continue to interpret data on a graph and addition word problems.

       The children had a good time on Friday enjoying their special treats.  I would like to  thank you  Nate's mother for being our class room mother and correlating our party.  
       This week the children will be reviewing previous taught sounds. They will continue to work on reading for fluency,  understanding and decoding words.  The children will learn about contraction in language.  I will be assessing the children on fluency, comprehension, and sight words.   
   In math they will continue to work with addition and subtraction.  They will work on adding numbers with 3 addends.  The children will continue to work with addition and subtraction word problems.

      This week the children will be learning about map skills in reading.  They will be working  with the sounds that /ch/, /tch/, /wh/, and /ph/. They will continue to work with identifying the main idea, identifying details in the story, and reading with fluency and understanding.  They  will continue to work on learning new vocabulary words.
     In math the children will continue to work on interpreting and writing addition and subtraction word problems.  They will continue to work on addition and subtraction. They will continue to work on reading and interpreting data on a graph.
      This week the children will enjoy reading  several poems and songs, as they prepare for the holiday this weekend.  They will have refreshments and play games on Friday, October 31st around 1:30.
      All children are asked to make a book character by using a pumpkin.  This information came home last week.
     THE CHILDREN WILL NOT WEAR THEIR HALLOWEEN COSTUME TO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY.

Week of October 20, 2024

This week the children will learn about Fire Safety.  They will go to the fire station an Murfreesboro Road and Forest View on Thursday, October 23.  Parents are invited to attend.  The children will continue to learn about related addition and subtraction facts, word problems, and number facts in math.  They will learn about the sounds that /sh/, /th/, and /ng/ stands for.  In reading the children will continue to work on building vocabulary, reading for fluency and understanding,  retelling and rewriting what they read, and telling the sequene of a story that they read or hear.

      Welcome back!  It was great to see all of my students this morning.  They were very excited about being back in school.
      This will be a very busy week as we prepare for our field trip to Walden Farms.  The children will need to bring a pair of jeans and a Ezell Harding t-shirt  to wear to the pumpkin patch.  The children will not be wearing their vocabulary costume.  If you are interested in going to the pumpkin patch please let me know by Thursday.  The cost will be $8.00.  This needs to be returned to me by Thursday.  All parents will need to drive their car and follow the school bus. Please make sure your child brings a sack lunch to school on Friday.
      Please make sure your child reads and returns their library book to school each day.  If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me.
