       Wow!  I can't believe this will be my last blog of the year.  This has been a great year.  All the children have made a lot of progress throughout the year.  I am so proud of each of them.  I would like to thank all my parents for the support that you have given me throughout the year.
       This week we will continue to work on our first grade memory book.  Your child may bring their yearbook to school on Monday,  so that I may sign it and their classmates.
       Allow your child to read for enjoyment and study their sight words and facts over the summer.

REMINDERS:
Monday-Thursday will be 1/2 day for all children.  If your child will be staying for extended day that will need to bring a lunch.

Tuesday:  The Fine Art will have their recital

Wednesday:  Elementary Award Presentation - 8:00

Thursday:  Game Day ( Your child may bring their favorite game to school)

       Wow!  Another fun and busy week.  This week the children will learn about the sound that /ar/and /air/ stand for.  The children will be reading stories about their country and mothers.  In math the children will learn about weight and measurement and continue to work with reviewing different strategies for addition and subtraction.  In language the children will continue to learn about common and proper nouns and pronouns.  They will be writing several narratives about their mothers as they prepare for Mother's Day.  In science they will continue to learn about the solar system.
The week's spelling words are as followed:  fair, pair, bear, wear, spare, share, favorite, surprise, hair,stare)  Bonus words:  Mother - Father

WEEKLY CLASS INFORMATION:

  • The children will be going to the public library on Monday.  They will eat lunch at the library.  Therefore, your child will need to bring a sack lunch.  Please include a drink and make sure your child's name is on the sack. 
  • This week reading and spelling test will be on Thursday.
  • The children will go to the park on Friday for a day of fun.  Parents are welcome to come  to the park and help and enjoy the day.
  •   Make sure your child puts sun blocker on before they leave home.  If your child brings sun blocker to put on while at the park please make sure their name is on it.
  • Your child will not have to bring a sack lunch on Friday.   However, they should bring two drinks.   Please make sure one of the drinks is water.   Lunch will be provided.
  • Children may bring balls and other outside toys.  NO HARD BALLS AND ELECTRONICS

         This week the children will learn about the sound of /gn/, /kn/, and /wr/.  Your child's spelling words will have these sounds in them.  The children will read several stories that have  words with these sounds.  They will identify the cause and effects within the story and the author's purpose for writing the story.  
       In math the children will continue to work on their math facts.  This week they will be working to learn their subtraction facts.  It is important that your child review their math facts at home as much as possible.  The children will continue to work on subtracting from a two-digit number.  
       I will be spending some time this week on reviewing handwriting.  Please encourage your child to always write their best and use correct letter formation and spacing.
      In science the children will begin a unit of study about space.  They will learn about the sun, moon, stars, and planets.

CLASSROOM REMINDERS:
  • Monday will be field-day.  Your child may wear shorts to the knee.  They may wear any shirt.  They will change to their field-day shirt when they get to school.  I want to give a special thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Duffey for designing our field-day shirts.  
  • The field trip to the library has been rescheduled to Monday, May 4th.  Your child should bring a sack lunch on this day.  We will have lunch at the library.

          The children will read to identify the author's purpose in  stories.  They will continue to work on reading for comprehension, improving decoding skills, and reading fluently.  The children will learn to blend sounds with the variant vowel /o/. Examples:  /aw/,/au/,/augh/, and /al/  Your child's spelling words will have this sound in it.
       In language the children will continue to read different versions of the story of Cinderella.  They will be comparing and contrasting the stories.  The children will review possessive pronouns and review the correct writing of days, months, and holidays.
        In writing the children will review the parts of a letter.  They will write thank you notes using the five parts of a letter.
       In math they will work real life word problems using two digit numbers.  They will continue to work two digit addition and subtraction problems.
       In social studies the children will learn about recycling.

WEEKLY REMINDERS:

  • The children will be presenting chapel on Thursday.  Parents are invited to attend.  Chapel begins at 8:05.
  • The children will go to the library on Thursday.  They will have lunch at the library.  ALL CHILDREN WILL NEED TO BRING A SACK LUNCH.  Please sent a drink with your child.
  • The children will be attending the Children's Theater on Friday.  They will seeing the play "The Cat in the Hat".

       This week your child will be taking their yearly achievement test. Your child will be tested on reading, language, and math skills.   The test will be given each day from 8:30-10:15.  It would be helpful, if you would talk with your child about listening and following directions.    This week the children will not have spelling words.  We will continue to work on reviewing reading and language skills each afternoon.
         In math the children will continue to work on counting coins (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, half-dollars).  The children will learn about even and odd numbers,  They will continue to work on addition/subtraction word problems and number facts.
         In Bible the children will continue to learn about "Rahab Helps Two Spies" and "The walls of Jericho Fall Down."  Joshua 6:1-27
Testing:  

  • Make sure your child is on time at school.  
  • Allow your child to have a good night sleep
  • Your child should have a good nutritious breakfast.
  •  Encourage your child - they only need to stay on task and do their best. No need to pressure as we don't want them to be anxious or stressed. They are prepared :)

       This week the children will learn about the blend and variant vowel /u/.  They will read several stories with words with the variant vowel /u/.  The children will continue to work on comprehension skills and  reading with fluency.  The children will learn some test taking strategies as they prepare for their achievement test next week. The children will write several narratives about their grandparents and spring sprint.
     In language the children will review  pronouns.  They will be encourage to use pronouns and adjectives in the writings.
       In math the children will learn about money.  They will learn how to count pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.
In Bible the children will learn about "Rahab Helps Two Spies"  Joshua 2:1-24
        The children will NOT have spelling words this week.  Instead your child will need to be able to write the following information:

  • Name :   First       Middle      Last
  • Address
  • City
  • State
  • Zip Code
Children will need to spell their city and state and not use abbreviations

        This week the children will learn about the sound of /oy/ and /oi/.  They will continue to work on comprehension, reading fluently, and learn more about cause and effects within a story. The children will review abbreviations.  The children will be reviewing skills as we prepared for the yearly achievement test.  We will continue to review sight words and read stories identifying the main idea and main details in a story.  It is strongly suggested that you allow your child to read for enjoyment as much as possible at home.
       In math the children will continue to learn about shapes.  They will be leaning and identifying  three dimensional figures have faces and vertices.  The children will be reviewing adding of three addends and finding the missing number in a addition and subtractions.
        In science the children will continue to learn about plants.  They will be doing several experiments in the Stem Lab about how plants survive.
        The children will continue to work on learning poems and songs about the Ten Commandments.  They will learn about the first Easter.


CLASS REMINDERS:

  1. The children will have an Easter Hunt on April 2nd.  Your child will need to bring 12 or more plastic eggs with candy. (No candy with peanuts)  Please put a small piece of tape on the egg so that the will not open up.
  2. The children will present chapel on April 9th.  the children will do an presentation on  The Ten Commandment
  3. The children will not attend school on Friday due to Good Friday
